Most photographers build websites expecting to sell some prints and
pick up some stock sales. Both are quite feasible if you do it right,
but it's really only scratching the surface of what's possible.
On average you'll probably find less than 10% of your visitors are
actually interested in your photos as such, and only a fraction of
those will arrive on your site with any sort of intention to buy.

Likewise if you think commercial buyers are going to turn up in
droves, wanting to license your images for books and magazines, or
maybe commission you for their next big project, don't hold your breath.
These people are professionals. they are on deadlines and their
time is precious ... they just haven't got the time or inclination
to search individual photographer web pages. They use
stock libraries
where they have a realistic expectation of finding what they need
every time.
Most of your visitors will arrive on your site because they
were searching the interent for information on your subjects.
If you photograph dogs for example, chances are they were searching
for something to do with dogs and not specifically looking for 'dog
photos'.
So your challenge is to get to know your visitors and how they
come to arrive on your site, and then find something to offer them.
With that in mind, I'm going to throw a few ideas at you that other
people are using to make money from their visitor traffic.
Most will revolve around Affiliate Marketing ... promoting other
people's products for a commission ... because I'm assuming most
people don't want to start a whole new business creating their own
products.
If you do though, the same processes apply, except you get to
keep 100% of the sales.
If you're uneasy about 'Affiliate Marketing' and think it's some
sort of scam or pyramid scheme, relax!
If you have ever clicked a link on a website to check out a book
on Amazon.com, you've clicked on an affiliate link ... if you bought
the book, an affiliate somewhere got paid a couple of dollars for
promoting the book to you.
Likewise, if you've ever clicked on a web banner, chances are someone
got paid if you made a purchase. It's just a simple, legitiate way of
advertising where seller pays for results.
